The search may not match your business closely enough
AI recommendations are contextual. A business can be highly relevant to one question and a poor match for another. Location, product type, audience, price point or specialist requirements can all change which providers are surfaced.
Your website may be clear to humans but vague to machines
A polished homepage can still leave basic questions unanswered. If services are hidden behind abstract language, important facts only exist inside imagery, or location and audience are unclear, an AI system has less dependable context to work with.
Competitors may have stronger supporting evidence
A competitor may have more detailed service pages, stronger reviews, better-known third-party references, clearer expertise or more consistent information across the web. That does not prove why a particular model selected them, but these are useful evidence gaps to investigate.
The AI platform itself matters
There is no single universal ChatGPT-style index shared by every AI assistant. Different systems can retrieve and weigh information differently, and outputs can vary between runs.
Test more than one engine and avoid drawing a major conclusion from a single answer.
What to do next
First confirm that your business is described accurately and specifically. Then test a small set of genuine customer searches, record which alternatives appear and compare the evidence available for those businesses with your own.
Work on identifiable gaps rather than trying to 'optimise for AI' with generic content written purely for machines.
